Genetic Test
The PKD1 (Polycystin 1, Transient Receptor Potential Channel) gene encodes the polycystin-1 protein, which plays a critical role in renal tubule formation. This genetic test targets one specific gene variant associated with polycystic kidney disease (PKD).
Disease Description
Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is characterized by the presence of multiple fluid-filled sacs, called cysts, within the kidneys. These cysts may be present at birth or may gradually enlarge over time as the animal ages, with significant variability in their growth rate. As the cysts grow, they progressively damage the normal renal tissue, potentially leading to chronic renal failure.
