Genetic Test
The CEP290 gene encodes a protein with structural functions in various cells. In the eye, it plays an important role in photoreceptor cells in the retina and provides structural support in the form of cilia.
Disease Description
As the disease progresses, retinal blood vessels become thinner and blood flow to the retina decreases. Vision is gradually lost, eventually leading to complete blindness. After the initial symptoms appear, the disease progresses in its early stages and typically causes severe and irreversible eye damage in companion cats within about four years.
