Genetic Test
The ABCB1 gene encodes a protein that transports various chemicals across the inner and outer membranes of cells. When a mutation occurs in this gene, drugs are not efficiently expelled from cells and remain inside for longer periods, which can lead to toxicity.
Disease Description
Multidrug sensitivity refers to symptoms of hypersensitivity to certain drugs or toxins. In particular, medications based on ivermectin can cause severe or even fatal reactions. However, companion cats carrying this genetic variant can generally lead normal lives if drug exposure remains within safe limits.
