Genetic Test
The COL4A4 (Collagen Type IV Alpha 4 Chain) gene encodes a protein that is a key component of type IV collagen, which plays an essential role in the structure and function of basement membranes throughout the body. Mutations in this gene have been associated with glomerulopathy and hematuria, conditions that affect kidney function.
This test targets two specific genetic variants associated with hereditary nephropathy in dogs.
Disease Description
Hereditary nephropathy, also known as familial nephropathy, is a progressive glomerular disease caused by genetic defects in collagen.
These defects impair the kidney’s ability to filter waste products from the blood and produce normal urine, leading to ongoing kidney damage.
Affected animals develop irreversible and fatal kidney conditions such as renal failure and cortical dysplasia, often resulting in early mortality.
